Dr. E. Richard Lane in Heaven

by Russell Dennis, Jr.

A few months ago, I saw this small device at a local auction. Only a few inches long, the brass tool came in its own leather case.

I was fascinated, but could only guess its use. However, 150 years ago, this was a standard item in the medical world.

On Wednesday morning, September 3, 2014, Heritage Baptist College saw another good friend graduate to heaven. Resting quietly, the Lord allowed Dr. Richard Lane to peacefully pass on to heaven at 84 years of age. Dr. Lane was the tallest of any of the Heritage professors. He liked to tell folks that he stood 5’ 17” tall. Dr. Lane taught at the old campus for over 20 years, retiring in 2005. Dr. Lane’s ministry spanned over 50 years, including pastoring the First Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Franklin, IN for 22 years. Dr. Lane had a great voice, and loved to share God’s praises. We look forward to singing with him again. For interested preachers, Heritage Baptist College has in its library a small collection of Dr. Lane’s original sermons.

New Name, Old Religion

by Russell Dennis, Jr.

The term ISIS and its persecution of non-Muslims, is the newest catch word to describe the latest Muslim, terrorist style religion.

WWI ignited 100 years ago and the Ottoman Empire joined Germany with the Turco-German Alliance in 1914. A group of men, known as the “Young Turks” were leading the Ottoman government which controlled much of the present-day Middle East.

Between Eastern Turkey and Russia there lives a group of homogeneous people known as Armenians. Their national religion is the Armenian Apostolic Church.

With the early Turkish setbacks in WWI, extremists preached “to save the empire it must be purified” – meaning purged of the non-Muslim elements. The purge began harmless enough, by disarming their own Armenian soldiers serving in the Turkish Army and assigning them to labor battalions (about 100,000 men). The Turks proceeded to work, and then starve those battalions to death.

Having eliminated the soldiers, the Turks sent an army onto the Armenian plateau. In town after town, all males over the age of 12 were gathered together and executed. The women were violated, killed, or sold into slavery. By the end of 1915, over 500,000 Armenians had been killed.

The killing did not stop there, but spread throughout the Middle East, and even on after WWI. By ten years later, 1 million more non-Muslim lives (mostly Armenian) had been taken in the crusade for Allah.

History records that “No one would ever be punished. In the years after the war the United States found it more advantageous to come to terms with the Muslims of the Middle East with their oil riches than to redress the wrongs done to an Armenian nation.” (Meyer, G.J. The World Undone. New York: Delacorte Press. 2006 [p. 291]).

History continues to repeat itself.

How Far Will We Go?

by Russell Dennis, Jr.

Zoe Bain in a past article for Delish (11/4/13), wrote concerning a small but immerging outreach in some churches. Even the writer seemed surprised that the connect with the community would center around “beer,” or in some places, “craft beer.” According to the article, certain groups have been holding services in bars or making brew themselves.

In Fort Worth, TX it is known as “Church in a Pub.” The group meets once a week to share a glass and even take communion. In Portland, Oregon, one Saturday every month, the First Christian Church holds “Beer & Hymns” (On this month’s calendar - September 20th at 5:00 p.m.).

The purpose of these beer themed services and events is to attract non-traditional members, ones whom might not attend on Sunday.

An activity like this 90 years ago would have been illegal (Prohibition). A story such as this reported 50 years ago would have been a joke. Today it stands as reality.

As churches continue to shun the teachings of the Word of God, the door is opened wider and wider for the absurdity of man’s imagination.

In 1971, John Lennon wrote his solo hit “Imagine”, and the lyrics tell the listener to imagine no heaven or hell – just live for today. We seemed to have arrived at that philosophy. The problem with that teaching is...a personal God does exists and there is Eternity.
