The President's Perspective

Heritage Update

Sam was the son of a preacher, and grew up with two brothers. Although encouraged to study at Yale College, his father's alma mater, young Sam returned home revealing that his true love was painting. The family assisted their son, sending him to England to study under some of the great artists in that country.

Returning to America, Sam began painting portraits, and his fame steadily grew. Soon his services became in demand, as he painted President John Adams, James Monroe, and the Marquis de Lafayette on his final visit to the United States in 1825. While same was working on this last painting, tragedy struck, when his 25 year old wife died of a heart attack. In the next few years, Sam's father and mother passed away, and in 1830, the aspiring painter traveled to Paris to make his mark on the world. During the two years in Paris, he becan his mammoth 6'x9' painting of the Gallery of the Louvre. In it Same painted a miniature, 38 of the Louvre's famous paintings. What he created to be his masterpiece, ended up selling for only $1,300. A few years later being denied the opportunity to paint one of the panels of the Capitol building, Sam quit painting altogether.

When Samuel returned to America in 1832, he brought from France the inception of an idea. That idea, was to devise a way to communicate with electricity. His father had often preached to his son, "attend to one thing at a time," so with focused attention, Samuel Morse began his epic invention, creating the working telegraph. "What hath God Wrought," were the first words tapped out on May 24, 1844 on the first official telegraph line.

Samuel Morse had begun in one direction in life, but had the wisdom when confronted with obstacles, to see a greater benefit that could be accomplished. So too in our lives, we may change direction, but we keep going forward for the Lord.

By the way, Sam's painting, Gallery of the Louvre, sold to a Chicago museum in 1982 for 3.25 million dollars, the highest sum ever paid up to that time for a work by an American artist. (McCullough, David. The Greater Journey. New York:Simon & Schuster. 2011.)

Meet Our Student

Heritage Update

Growing up in a military family, Noah Canales traveled much during his early life. As is often the case, they lived in various locations across the country.

Noah finally came to live in the Indianapolis area, and at 10 years old, he visited the Brownsburg Baptist Church where he gave his heart to Christ.

Noah grew in the Lord, and after graduating from high school, he asked his youth leader for counsel.

One good rule for any Christian young person, is to take one year of Bible college to lay a foundation for any direction that the Lord will lead. In a day and age when our Biblical heritage is under attack, it is so important for all studnets to be grounded in the Truth.

Noah was directed to visit Heritage Baptist College and he enrolled in the one year Bible diploma.

Taking classes five days a week has so encouraged Noah, that now he plans to persue a degree. Instead of one year, he plans to continue in his studies.

When asked about his future, Noah just states: "I follow the Lord one day at a time."
