Dr. Dave Martin to Preach During Graduation Week

On April 29 – May 1 we will hold the Graduation Week activities for Heritage Baptist College. A great line up of 12 preachers is planned, and one of the week’s highlights will be the combined meeting of local churches on Wednesday, April 30, 2025. Dr. Dave Martin pastored for over 35 years, and now represents First Bible. Dr. Martin has taught over the years at Heritage Baptist College, and he is also loved for his music ministry at the school.

It is always a joy to have Dr. Martin at Heritage. He is a friend to Christians and his messages are relevant and helpful. This is our eighteenth year to host this combined service, and we look forward to a special evening filled with great enthusiasm, kindness, and Christian fellowship among the churches.

Is Training that Important?

In March of 1941, the U.S. Army Air Corps was testing a new bomber at Patterson Air Field, near Dayton, Ohio. Exactly two years before, the Army Air Corps had issued a proposal for a twin engine bomber that could fly 300 mph, travel 3,000 miles, and carry a bomb load of 2,000 lbs. The Glen L. Martin Company won the design, and in less than 2 years the plane went from concept to production. Even as the Army Air Corp tested the prototypes, over 1100 bombers were on order. As WWII approached, the military hurried to be prepared. The new medium bomber was dubbed the B-26 Marauder.

As the B-26 began service, it became known as a difficult plane to fly. The plane experienced many accidents, especially with inexperienced pilots. MacDill Air Field in Tampa, Florida, trained many B-26 pilots. There were so many accidents in the early months that the saying became: “One a Day in Tampa Bay.”

Pilots began nicknaming the B-26 as “B-Dash-Crash”, the “Flying Coffin”, and the “Widow maker.”

It is ironic, that an airplane so difficult to fly, would earn the record as the best “return from mission” rate of any bomber of WWII Europe. One B-26 set a mission record unequalled by any other plane. The B-26, named Flak Bait, flew 207 missions over enemy territory and never lost a man. The Flak Bait had its share of war damage returning - twice on one engine, twice with the electrical system knocked out, and once with the hydraulic system gone. (Lanning, Michael. The Blister Club. Lanham, MD: Stockpole Books. 2021. p. 316). Those that mastered how to fly the B-26 were considered by some, as the best day-time bomber pilots in the world. The key to success was commitment and learning.

That same level of purpose is needed in the Christian life. It may seem difficult to regularly read the Bible, pray, go to church, witness, etc. But all of this is important training to help us to be a successful Christian...a soldier for Christ.

The Verse Offered No Protection

In 2015, Billboard Magazine named Christopher Wallace (1972-1997), the greatest Rapper of all time. Known to the music world by his stage name: Notorious B.I.G., Christopher Wallace lived a life filled with sin, violence, and crime. With hit songs like: “Ten Crack Commandments”, “Nasty Girl”, and “Suicidal Thoughts”, Wallace chafed against his religious upbringing. In his genre of rap music, Notorious B.I.G. was a star, and his singles would sell a 1⁄2 million copies. He produced only two albums in his short career: Ready to Die (1994) & Life After Death (1997).

A week before his death, the Gangsta rap music artist, Christopher Wallace (aka Notorious B.I.G.), proudly displayed his newest tattoo – it was a passage from the King James Bible. His tattoo listed Psalm 27:1a: The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear?

Only a few days later, on March 8th, while riding in a three vehicle caravan in Los Angeles, Wallace was purposely gunned down in a drive-by shooting. He was just short of his 25th birthday. (Brown, Adele. What a Way to Go. San Francisco: Chronicle Books 2001. p. 94-98)

The Word of God will only do a person good when it is on the inside. Psalm 119:11 states: Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
