Thirteenth Year to Begin at Hopewell
Classes begin for the 2023 Fall Semester on Wednesday, August 30th.
After a wonderful summer, we are looking forward to the thirteenth year on our beautiful campus. Teachers and students are excited to get back to school after the break.
The opening day chapel service for Heritage Baptist College will be held on Wednesday, August 30, 2023. The service will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the college chapel, and it will be followed by a wonderful dinner.
Dr. Dave Martin, from Cincinnati, will be the special preacher for the morning service. Dr. Martin is a talented friend, and he has taught at Heritage in past years.
Make plans to come and receive a blessing from the Lord!
An Obstacle turned into an Opportunity
President Dennis’ wife, Rhonda, grew up in Youngstown, Ohio. One hundred years ago in Youngstown, Mr. Harry Burt created the idea of chocolate covered ice cream on a stick. He named it the Good Humor Ice Cream Bar. His refrigerated trucks with their salesmen in clean, white uniforms were an instant success as they drove through the neighborhoods.
In a few years they began to sell franchises in the bigger cities. Tom Brimer, a 26 year-old from Tennessee, began marketing the ice cream in mob controlled Chicago. In 1929 he refused to pay the gangsters $5,000 in protection money, and a few days later they blew up his eight ice cream trucks with dynamite. What looked like a step back became a leap forward.
The front page headlines across the country made Good Humor Ice Cream nationally known, and the company surged ahead as a viable business. That year the stock market collapsed, but the Good Humor Ice Cream Co. grew, and during the Depression the company paid dividends.
Christians sometimes experience difficulties, but we need to remember that we are not forgotten. The obstacle may be for our betterment. One has only to turn the pages of the Bible to read of Job (who ended up with twice as much), Joseph (who ended up the No. 2 ruler in Egypt), and David (who ended up with the kingdom), to realize that with God’s help we can surmount the difficulties and last until the blessings.

Hot Days
August is traditionally the hottest month of the year, and none more so than in Texas. Imagine one hundred and fifty years ago, and how our fore fathers struggled with the heat.
Ross Pares in his book on “religion in the West,” tells the story of a Baptist church in the 1870’s that sought to discipline one of their members for publically lying.
What had brought about the charge was that the said member had just returned from a trip to Jefferson, TX. While in that city, he claimed that he had witnessed the spectacle of artificial ice (Jefferson, was the home of the first mechanical ice factory in Texas).
Before expelling the man for lying, a member suggested that in all fairness an investigation should be launched. As is often the case, the church appointed the brother who had made the suggestion to travel to Jefferson and investigate.
The member made the journey, and on his return reported to the congregation. He stated that as amazing as it sounded, he had actually seen ice being made, even though it was over 100o F outside.
The congregation listened to the report, and promptly kicked both of the men out of the church. (Phares, Ross. Bible in Pocket, Gun in Hand. Garden City, NY: DoubleDay. 1964. p. 96)
Not Forgetting the Details
God recently allowed us to complete and pay for the repair of the roof. Many churches and individuals gave to this emergency project, and we are so thankful. Ten skids of shingles were placed up on the roof, and workman labored three days to finish.
The cupola on top of the Hopewell building is an iconic symbol in the community. Over the eighty-seven years of its existence, that cupola has often been repainted. When we bought the school, it was solid white. Butch Bailey of Berean Baptist Church headed the cupola project, and he designed the work scaffolding and also chose to add detail to the trim. The contrast is amazing!
“Following through with the details” is also good advice as we serve in the Ministry.
But I was shocked, when I later saw a forgotten picture of this building from 1936. The original paint of the cupola had the center slats also detailed in what appears to be black!
After almost 90 years, details are still important!
