The Buck (or Buffalo) Stops Here
They are called the “Black Death”, and when angry, they are lethel. The Cape Buffalo, is considered to be the most dangerous animal of the Big Five of Africa. These grass eating animals weigh about a ton, and they kill on average, about 200 people a year. Cape Buffalo are known to have killed more hunters than any of the other famous African man-eaters.
Several reason for their “widowmaker” status is their size, speed (30 mph), aggressiveness if angry, when wounded counter attacking, and their ability to remember a foe.
Several years ago, I attended a hunter’s auction of exotic animal mounts. This Cape Buffalo was on the wall, and the plaque said that it was shot by Joe Trent of Kokomo, IN.
In the early 1970’s, this vicious Cape Buffalo was singled out because of its destructiveness. In his rampage, the Cape Buffalo killed a local woman.
Enter Joe Trent who traveled from Indiana to hunt in the wilds of the Dark Continent.
On October 17, 1973, this Cape Buffalo ended his reign of terror when Joe Trent fired his Weatheryby Magnum high powered rifle, and bagged the brute.
Now a days, many people would frown (or worse), when reading of the destruction of such a magnificent animal. How ironic is that many of these same people are stanch supporters of abortion, and the death of an innocent life.
But these folks forget the teaching of the Bible. Exodus 21:28 states: “If an ox gore a man or a woman that they die; then the ox shall surely be stoned,...” The principle stands that if an animal destroys a human life, the life of the animal is forfeited.
God would further hold human life so sacred, that even if a human committed the murder, his life was taken to pay for the crime. Until this past generation, our government held strictly to the death penalty. But somewhere along the line, our leaders and judges pretended to know more about life than God. Is it any wonder that in many cities, the yearly murder rate has skyrocketed, like Indianapolis, going from 153 in 2019, and now averaging over 234 homicides yearly over the past 4 years.
Joe Trent never forgot that day. With the death of this killer Cape Buffalo, Joe may have prevented the loss of other lives. This giant trophy hung on the wall of his family room for forty years,...and a forgotten fact: that Cape Buffalo never killed again.
Still Working
Next to Duct Tape, probably the best secret weapon of the handyman comes in a can called WD-40. The fine oil is a cure-all to loosen rust and stop squeaks, and it has been a special part of American repair for over 60 years.
When I see a can of WD-40, I am spiritually encouraged. Those two letters combined with two numbers tell a story.
Back in 1953, during the early aerospace industry, a small lab in San Diego, CA set out to produce rust-prevention solvents and degreasers for rockets. Norman B. Larsen (1923-1970), and his staff of two, developed the formula that they labeled as Water Displacement (WD) and perfected it on the 40th try. Hence, the name WD-40.
Two thoughts cross my mind when I see that logo. The idea to give it another try...40 to be exact, encourages me to keep going.
The second thought deals with the finished product. The formula that was created 71 years ago is the same today. There has never been a WD-41 or 42. It does not need an update, an add-on, or a revision. It works. We as Christians sure enjoy some wonderful finished products: Our Salvation, Christ’s church, and our King James Bible, just to name a few.
And another little fact...WD-40 is not even patented.
Here and Gone
According to Golf Digest, the odds for an average golfer to make a hole-in-one, is 12,000 to 1. For someone to bowl a perfect 300 pin game is very close to the same odds at 11,500 to 1. Both of these accomplishments are viewed as great achievements.
On October 16, 2008, 62-year-old Don Doane went to Ravenna Bowl just outside of Muskegon, MI to take part in league bowling. That night Don bowled 12 strikes in a row, ending with a perfect score of 300. Moments later, as he was high-fiving his teammates, Don fell over dead with a heart attack.
A decade before (12/22/95), and on the West Coast, golfer Peter Sedore was playing a round of golf at Panorama Village Golf Course. On the 4th hole he hit a hole-in-one. The three-some erupted with congratulations, but as the 83-year-old golfer went to sign the scorecard and make the success official, Peter Sedore collapsed and died in the arms of his golfing buddy.
Each of these men had a personal victory, but they didn’t live to savor the glory.
These two occurrences remind me how fleeting can be man’s temporal life and his varied accomplishments.
