July 2020 Update

Planning for This Fall

The landscape of education in our country is in a flux as to the training for the upcoming semester. Some prominent institutions are holding classes strictly online, while others are proposing different ideas.

The plans for Heritage Baptist College are to begin on Wednesday, September 2, 2020 with teaching in the classroom. During last semester, no one became sick with the virus. We will have health protocols in place.

Our teachers are looking forward to fulfilling the mission of training young people to serve the Lord.

If you know of students that may be hesitant or unable to continue in their Biblical Studies, please let them know of the opportunities at Heritage Baptist College.

Any Comparison?

Recently, as I went through a box of old photos, I came across this dated coupon. The paper slip stated that it was a receipt for Duty and Identification, specifically for baggage. What caught my eye were the name, date, and the vessel that was written on this form.

In the summer of 1954, my father was given a trip to the Bible Lands as his college graduation gift. After spending over a month visiting the sights of Israel, he boarded Italy’s largest luxury cruise liner, the recently built Andrea Doria.

I have my Dad’s journal of his trip, and the time aboard was pleasantly spent. The only difficulty came when one piece of his luggage was lost, as identified on this coupon. I do not know if his belongings were ever found.

Less than two years later, on July 26, 1956, that ship, the Andrea Doria, sunk just off the coast of Nantucket, MA, after colliding with a smaller passenger ship in a dense fog.

Media coverage focused on the event, and Harry Trask won a Pulitzer Prize for this picture of the sinking ship. Over 50 people died in the wreck, which was the highest loss of life in American waters since 1915.

Comparing the two events - a lost piece of luggage pales in comparison to the loss of a luxury liner and its many victims.

We have been subjected to a recent pandemic. Some have wonderingly compared it to the plagues of Revelation, but any student of the Bible understands differently. If there is any comparison between the two, it would be like my token coupon: a lost piece of luggage, versus a loss of the complete ship.

The Bible states there will be a 7-year period of utter Judgement coming on this Earth. Only the saved will escape it.

Fly High

Wilbur Wright, was born in Millville, Indiana. Along with his younger brother, Orville, the pair became the first to achieve powered flight.

The quest to arrive at that discovery took the duo through many ups and downs.

Wilbur Wright had this quote: No bird soars in a calm. (McCullough, David. The Wright Brothers. New York: Simon & Schuster. 2015. Opening page).

And so, in our service for the Lord, we go through many storms. The LORD, our Captain, will see us through.

Picture Perfect

“One picture is worth a thousand words” was a phrase introduced one hundred years ago. In the San Antonio Light this expression was applied to describe the newpaper’s 1918 pictorial magazine of WWI.

Robert Page used his camera as his pen. He would say, “I carry a Canon, and I like to shoot people.” Brother Bob was a regular at the Heritage events for decades. His photos, printed in our literature, would often describe in colorful details, the people, places, and wonderful times at the college.

On June 29, 2020, Bob Page went home to heaven. He lived 89 years, and during that time he watched as photography developed from bulky film into the digital age. Brother Page has now moved one step further to where: “eye hath not seen…the things that God hath prepared for them that love Him” (I Corinthians 2:9).
