Summer 2020 Edition

The Picnic of 2020

With the outbreak of the Cornavirus, we have been motivated to adapt to various changes. After a delay, we thank the Lord that we were able to finish classes in the second week of June.

Graduation week was cancelled, but we did have one last event to conclude the 2019-2020 school year. On June 26th we gathered for an outdoor time of singing & fellowship. The tubs of fried chicken, 240 fillets of fried Crappie, and 25 lbs. of pulled pork, plus fixings and pie filled everyone. Our hats go off to all the cooks.

The program featured Pastor and Mrs. Sam Gabbard in a wonderful mini concert, along with a short message from President Dennis. Although the rain was near, the evening turned out sunny and breezy.

The offering goal of the summer expenses was $16,000. When the plates were passed around and counted, the goal was met with a total of $16,075 given in cash. Praise the Lord!

The President’s Perspective

It could be called the tale of two pair of boots, or you could see it as a tale of two neighbors.

Soon after my Dad bought be my first pair of cowboy boots, I saw a pair of Alligator boots. Forty years ago the price tag on those boots was $400. Over the decades, my desire to own a pair of Alligator boots remained the same, while the price of those boots continued to climb.

Imagine my surprise when at an auction of police drug confiscation items, I saw two pair of immaculate black, Alligator boots. (Some of these criminals have extremely good taste.) I promptly won both sets for only $75 a pair.

A year or two before, I had the blessing of a Baptist pastor and his family moving in next door to us. A preacher can only dream of this kind of fun. It was not unusual, as we head out for Sunday morning, hollering back and forth across the yard relating our upcoming message. The neighborhood gets the sermon before the church does!

Several days after I had bought the boots, I saw Pastor Hunter, and I told him that I had found a pair of black Alligator boots. "Oh," he exclaimed, "I always wanted a pair of those." I figured that if the Bible said to share coats, you should share boots too. I asked him what size he wore, and it was exactly the same size as mine. I then told my preacher friend that I also had a 2nd pair, and that he was welcome to it. He refused receiving them for free, but accepted the boots and the paid $75.

My thought on the great savings and opportunity to own a costly pair of boots was a fulfillment of Psalm 37:4 (Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.) My neighbor put on his boots and enlightened me. He said, "I know that I'm preaching on this Sunday." He pointed to the boots and said, "Here is the title of my message 'The Devil had them last week, but the Lord has them today!'" What a truth for many a person now on their way to heaven!

If we will be "Christian" neighbors, and begin to love each other as Christ taught, we can gain so much from each other.

They Will Come Back Better

What do we as Pastor's desire for our young people who go off to Bible college?

To enjoy themselves- Well yes!

To find a mate- Maybe.

To learn more of the Bible- Definitely.

I believe that we want them to come back with a greater knowledge of the Bible and great passion to serve the Lord.

Pastor, "you are the key" to help your young person. If you don't keep encouraging your young people and pointing out the need for a Christian education, then they will head in a different direction. You are the one who can help guide them.

I remember myself. I was not quite 18 years old. All I knew was that I wanted to serve the Lord. My pastor, Jimmy Allen, guided me to BBC in Springfield, MO. He knew what kind of education I would get. Back in 1964, young people came out of BBC with passion to build a great Sunday School and church for the glory of God. My pastor was a great help to me!

Today, there are many colleges to choose from- many with lots of bells and whistles. But what do you want for your young person? How will they come back?

Let me show you what Heritage Baptist College has to offer your young people.

Even though we are small, we have quality education to give to your young people. Our instructors give a "hands on" education that is invaluable to the student.

For example:

-Four semesters of Bible Doctrine

-Two semesters of Baptist History

-An understanding and love of our King James Bible

Practical classes such as:

-Sunday School School Administration (How to set up and build a SS)

-Church Administration (The building and operating of a church)

-Song leading/choir

-Secondary education classes

Heritage will equip your younger person so that they will come back better, ready to go out and serve the Lord.

Meet Our Student

Kok (pronounced Coke) Mars grew up in the village of Aut Yen in the country of Myanmar (Burma). Burma was the field of Adoniram Judson, the first Baptist missionary (1813-1850). Judson overcame many obstacles in missionary planting, but his efforts took root. Today, that country has over 3,000 Baptist churches.

Kok Mars was not saved as a young person. After graduating from high school in Burma, he desired to make money. Traveling to Malasia in search of work, he found that to be difficult. In the faces of these pressures, Kok Mars began praying and attending church. In 2007, he accepted Christ as his personal Savior.

The following year, he had the chance to travel to the United States. After several moves, he arrived in Indianapolis.

Brother Kok sought out Heritage for more training. He is currently pastoring a congregation of Burmese on the Southside of Indy.

As Pastor Kok says: "I love Heritage Baptist College because they teach the truth of the Bible."
